UMSL Volunteer of the Month

I found out today that I was selected as the UMSL Volunteer of the Month for June 2011 for my work with Gallery Visio. Stephanie Sivils, the gallery director wrote the following comments on the nomination form:

Maria Marshall at Gallery Visio

Maria Marshall's live art installation at Gallery Visio last night was a hit. It is not every day that you have the opportunity to witness the birth of the creative process. During the course of the evening, Marshall flitted around the gallery adding ever expansive scenes and details to her charcoal drawings on the walls, all while engaging in conversation with the audience. The energy was palpable and it seemed to feed her imagination.

WAYS TO SEE

I am very interested in teaching people how to read visual language, so last week I created an informational guide titled "Ways to See" for Gallery Visio. The impetus for the project was my visit to Laumeier Sculpture Park a couple of weeks ago where I watched people browse through the galleries without taking the time to look critically at the artworks. Cedarhurst Sculpture Park

Aldon Addington's Northern Moon, 1991 is one of about 60 artworks dotting the landscape at the Cedarhurst Sculpture Park located in Mount Vernon, IL. On Sunday May 8th, I spent the afternoon walking the sprawling grounds and taking notes on some of my favorite sculptures, which will be featured in an upcoming ARTNPerspective blog post.
