WAYS TO SEE

May 19, 2011
I am very interested in teaching people how to read visual language, so last week I created an informational guide titled "Ways to See" for Gallery Visio. The impetus for the project was my visit to Laumeier Sculpture Park a couple of weeks ago where I watched people browse through the galleries without taking the time to look critically at the artworks. I have used this type of visual analysis checklist before with the students I have worked with at the University of Missouri-Kansas City; however, I modified it to make it more user friendly for the general public. It is still a work in progress so let me know what you think. Questions and comments are welcome!

On the one hand, installing the show was easy because they provided a detailed layout; however, trying to adhere to their rigid requirements was frustrating at times. Nonetheless, figuring out the process with the gallery director was a great learning experience.

Musical Performance at University of Missouri-St. Louis

April 13, 2011
Last night I attended a musical performance at the Touhill Performing Arts Center. The Department of Music presented "University Percussion and Afro-Cuban Ensembles" conducted by Matthew Henry and "Vocal Point" conducted by James Henry. All of the selections were great, but my favorite performance was a piece called "Systems."  It was an extremely complicated arrangement with strange off beat vocals and rhythms. Wow! It was amazing.
